It’s no secret that we all need to start doing more to take care of our planet and reduce our environmental impact.

But when you think about adopting more sustainable practices into your daily life, do you get a little overwhelmed?

Maybe you think it’s all a bit too complicated.

Or maybe you simply don’t know where to start.

Here’s the thing: living a more sustainable life doesn’t need to be complicated — nor does it need to involve a major lifestyle overhaul!

In fact, a few small changes in your day-to-day life can make a huge difference to your environmental footprint. And the easiest place to start is right in your home by reducing your household waste. Zero-Waste Chef Anne Marie Bonneau said it best:

“We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly, we need millions of people doing it imperfectly.”

Check out these 7 simple ways to reduce your waste at home

1. Sort out your trash

If you haven’t committed to a proper waste system in your home, now is the time to start! Get yourself three bins — one for garbage, one for recycling, and one for green waste or compost — and try as hard as you can to sort out your trash accordingly.
Remember, a lot of food scraps can be composted and returned to the earth instead of going to landfill in the usual garbage. If you find that your recycling and green compost bins fill up faster than your usual garbage bin, you know you’re doing it right!

2. Say no to plastic bags

One of the easiest ways to reduce your waste at home is to stop using plastic bags. Stock up on a few reusable tote bags as well as some reusable produce bags and always keep them handy for when you go shopping — keep one in your bag or backpack, a couple in your car and hang some up by the door so you never get caught short.

3. Stop using plastic water bottles or takeaway cups

Did you know plastic water bottles and takeaway coffee cups are the two largest contributors to the world’s waste? In the US alone, 35 billion plastic bottles are thrown away every year, along with 16 billion disposable coffee cups.
While these figures are staggering, there is a very simple action you take to help turn this around — bring your own reusable water bottle and reusable coffee cup. This is such an easy change to adopt in your daily life and, if we all did it, it could have a huge impact. With SO many options of keep cups and reusable water bottles available — in all shapes, sizes and styles — there’s really no excuse not to have your own.

4. Go packaging free (or choose recyclable options)

When shopping, always try to look for package-free options. However, if you have to purchase something in packaging, opt for cardboard, recyclable or biodegradable materials and avoid plastic as much as possible.
If you have a bulk food store nearby, such as Live Zero, you can fill up your own reusable jars and containers with everything from dry food to beauty and cleaning products — eliminating single-use packaging altogether!

5. Make the switch to reusable or zero-waste items in the bathroom

You may think most of your household waste comes from the kitchen — but a lot can come from your bathroom too! From your humble toothbrush to razors and cotton buds, you may not realise just how many single-use items you use in your daily hygiene routine.
Fortunately, there are now so many reusable and zero-waste options available for bathroom and hygiene products, such as reusable razors, reusable bamboo make up wipes and zero-waste shampoo bars. If you haven’t already, now is the time to ditch your plastic toothbrush too and opt for a more eco-friendly, biodegradable bamboo toothbrush instead!

6. Cut down on food waste by making a weekly meal plan

Food waste is a huge problem worldwide — in fact, one-third of all food produced is lost or wasted. But you can prevent food waste in your own home by following this simple rule in your weekly shop: only buy the groceries that you know you will eat.
So, how do you know what you will eat during the week? Make a meal plan! If you only buy the groceries you need for your meal plan, you’ll have a lot less (or hopefully zero) wastage by the end of the week. Also, make sure that you are storing your food properly to maximise its freshness and shelf life.

7. Don’t ditch it, fix it!

So, what do you usually do when something breaks at home? Do you simply throw it away and buy a replacement? Well, we have a challenge for you — the next time something breaks, try to fix it BEFORE you decide to ditch it!
Of course, this isn’t possible for everything, but it’s a small change that can help you shift towards a more sustainable mindset. For all your future purchases, commit to buying high quality, durable products and avoid cheap or disposable items.

How Beams Co. is helping to reduce waste — one coffee capsule at a time

Single-serve plastic and aluminum coffee pods cause a huge amount of waste each year. It has been estimated that of the 39,000 coffee pods made every minute, 29,000 will end up in landfill. Scary, right?

That’s why Beams Co. coffee capsules are 100% biodegradable and compostable, made entirely from plant materials. Under the right conditions, our coffee capsules will fully break down into compost after 10 weeks — this means our entire capsule can return to nature, leaving behind nothing but biomass, Co2 and water.

Not only that, but we’ve also partnered with eco-conscious packaging providers. The paper and cardboard packaging we use is made from at least 50% post-consumer content and for every 200 boxes that we purchase, our provider will plant 1 tree and gift it through EcoMatcher.

These are just a few of the ways Beams Co. is aligning with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Learn more about our sustainability story here.
